Freddie Mercury was incredibly generous when he was alive but made sure his loved ones would keep receiving gifts every single year even after he was gone…
Freddie famously said: “Money may not be able to buy happiness but it can damn well give it!” But he didn’t just splash his money around for effect. Freddie always took time and care to select the perfect gift for those he loved. He explained: “A little gift, a gesture, a nuance…means far more than someone buying you Big Ben.” He was still doing just that during his final weeks.
Peter Freestone revealed that Freddie was always thinking about his friends.
“Freddie thought more about other people than himself. He knew people like me and Joe would look after him. So he could look after his friends. He took such pleasure in that.”
“He had a birthday book with every single birthday of every friend in there. He wanted to make sure he never forgot a single one.
“If he met someone he liked he would take out the book and add in their birthday. He would also send a personal note after a lovely dinner. He was a real gentleman.”
He also arranged an incredible gift for loved ones which would be delivered to them every single year. Other friends still receive that knock on the door every year after Freddie arranged a special delivery to be paid from his estate.
Also, every year indulgent Christmas hampers are sent out from luxury store Fortnum & Mason. They are delivered to close friends and his godchildren.
A spokesperson for the store said: “We do think it’s a lovely gesture.”
It’s just another example of Freddie’s extraordinary spirit and love for his nearest and dearest.
