16 May 1982, Queen performed @ Ernst-Merck-Halle in Hamburg, Germany 🇩🇪 “Hot Space European Tour”

After playing the South American football stadiums last year, this venue with a capacity of about 6,000 probably felt like a gymnasium to the band!

Freddie plays a bit of ‘My Fairy King’ in his piano intro to ‘Play The Game’ – a very rare occurrence. After the song, he mentions how it’s “like a Hamburg sauna.” He then shouts, “Ok, we’re gonna cool you down a bit!” as he pours some beer on the front rows. “You need that!”

Roger plays a brief drum solo before ‘Under Pressure,’ and he would do it every night here on for the rest of the European/UK tour.

After the previous night’s events, it’s no coincidence that the band choose to play the more comfortable setlist containing only three ‘Hot Space’ songs tonight. Freddie clearly hasn’t forgotten. After ‘Under Pressure,’ he says, “Ok, it’s time we get really heavy now. I think we need to. Well, in the meantime, is everybody okay? You sure?” He rarely asked for confirmation like that. “Alright, we’re gonna do a song about fat dirty ladies. You know what I’m talking about. You know, it’s a Brian May composition. It’s ‘Fat Bottomed Girls.’”

Freddie is feeling happy and confident enough to the point that he even improvises a bit of ‘Spread Your Wings’ before ‘Bohemian Rhapsody.’ He doesn’t remember the chords or the words, as Queen weren’t the studio musician types who could rhyme off any random musical passage on request – they rehearsed a particular version of their show diligently to perfection, allowing for the occasional fun deviation. After he sings the first line (a key lower), “Sammy was low,” the audience, in perfect tune and time, sing the next line, “Just watching the show.” He’d reference the song in concert only once more, later this year in Osaka.

At the end of the show, he says more than usual: “Thank you for being a brilliant audience tonight.” And he adds (once again, probably comparing tonight to last night), “Rock and roll! Hot space, hot space. Everything.”
