Freddie Mercury on the set of ‘Made In Heaven’ July 1985
This magnificent video was filmed in A Royal Opera House replica that was built inside a warehouse in North London (as normal studios did not have high enough roofs), where Mercury wanted to recreate scenes from Stravinskij’s The Rite of Spring and Dante’s Inferno.
It was quite a spectacular production, with hundreds of extras writhing amid the smoke, raging storms and flames wearing body stockings,
The most remarkable scene was when Freddie was perched atop a mountain on a 60 ft rotating globe in a Wagnerian costume, and soared heavenwards on a hidden flying wire at the climax to the four and a half minute min-epic.
The operatic song was directed by top filmmaker David Mallet, who also claimed the credits for ‘I Was Born To Love You’ – coupling Freddie with 300 balletic Amazons.
David said that this was the only time he and Freddie almost had words as he wasn’t keen on being on top of the moving globe. Freddie was anxious and after he finished the scene, he apologized.
