These days in October 1979, Freddie is fiercely rehearsing with the Royal Ballet 🩰

Wayne Eagling’s first meeting with Freddie..

In August 1979, Royal Ballet principle Wayne Eagling went looking for a particularly limber star to join their ranks for a charity gala performance. After Kate Bush turned them down, Eagling turned his attention to Freddie Mercury.

Though his initial reaction was less than favorable (“I thought they were mad!”), he eventually warmed to the idea after speaking to the head of EMI, Sir Joseph Lockwood, who also happened to be the chairman of the Royal Ballet board of governors. “Freddie had a general interest in the ballet, but Lockwood really got him fired up,” said Queen manager John Reid in The Great Pretender. “He was fascinated by the scale. It was epic. And everything about Freddie’s performance was epic.” It was a perfect match.

Wayne said, “It was a wonderful first meeting Freddie turned up wearing tights and ballet shoes. We all took one look at him and nearly fainted. I remember we were in the middle of rehearsing Bohemian Rhapsody, when in walked the choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton.”

He asked me what I was doing , then suddenly scowled at Freddie and demanded in a strangled voice

“ AND WHO IS HE “

Freddie is… Well, he’s my best friend

Freddie is… Well, he’s my best friend

“Freddie is… Well, he’s my best friend. He’s very good for me, you know. I do not like meeting new people, but when I’m with Freddie I stop being shy! It’s amazing how he “works” on me. And sometimes he’s the only one person who understands me… He’s my voice, you know…”

10 December 1977, Queen performed @ The Tarrant County Convention Center Arena, Ft. Worth, Texas 🇺🇸 ‘News of The World’ Tour

This gig in Fort Worth was one of the shows Bob Harris once said he and his crew had intended to film for his proposed documentary. Footage of the stage setup was seen in the “American Dream” documentary on the News Of The World box set released in 2017 (as well as on the similar BBC documentary “Rock The World” the same year).

The black and white photos were taken by (and copyrighted to) Curtis Smith.

Freddie loved towels and bathroom linen of all descriptions.

Freddie loved towels and bathroom linen of all descriptions. The bigger the towel the more he liked it. Freddie found a large array of exotically patterned bath sheets, huge, almost the size of bed sheets. He also found some amazing blankets which he used to wrap around himself while watching television rather than putting them on the bed. He might have not even been cold but just loved the blankets which were of a fluffy man-made fiber representing angora, patterned in circles, stripes and triangles of bright primary colors on a white background.

Freddie was a Mega Star, a Legend and a giant in the music industry. But yet he was just a man filled with tenderness, gentleness and who loved the simple things in life which provided him comfort and solace. I can’t be sure, but I would assume those nights watching T.V. wrapped in a blanket provided him some of the most peaceful times in his life. We should know everything we possibly can about Freddie, and I think this is a sweet little find.

“It’s A Hard Life

“It’s A Hard Life

June 1984, Queen on the set of “It’s A Hard Life” promo video, directed by Tim Pope and filmed at the Arnold & Richter studio in Munich, Germany 🇩🇪

The extravagant video was very expensive. It included a large number of extras and an enormous set. The video also featured a custom made guitar designed for Brian in Japan, the piece has a skull shaped body and long, bone shaped neck which was impossible to play and far too small for Brian, but at a cost of over £1000 it was used rather wisely as much as possible.

Roger, John and Brian weren’t too thrilled with the costumes as they were tight, heavy, uncomfortable and hot. They spent long hours filming the opulent scene of debauchery. Roger threatened to walk off the set!

Freddie of course, had a marvelous time in his red outfit with the eyes or as Roger called it, the ‘Mediterranean Prawn.’

Roger openly admits to “loving the record, but really hating the video”, said in the video commentary: “I think we look more stupid in this video than any other artists has looked in a video.”

9 December 1980, Queen performed their second of three evenings at Wembley Arena, London

“The Game” Tour

Queen are a force to be reckoned with by this point in the tour, and this show in particular is such an excellent one on all levels. Musically they are spot on, and Freddie’s voice is nothing short of perfect, hitting virtually every note he wants to. Their vocal harmonies are tight, with ‘Play The Game’ being a notable mention.

In light of John Lennon’s tragic murder the night before (8 December Queen put together a version of ‘Imagine’ to be performed tonight in honor of the former ‘Beatle.’ All the lights went down and just one spotlight remaining as Queen played the beautiful tribute

Freddie recited the lyrics from a scrap piece of paper. It is clearly an emotionally challenging task for the band to deliver this iconic song written by one of their heroes on such an occasion, and the gesture is much appreciated by the audience who give them a standing ovation afterward. A fan recalls, “I particularly remember Roger being very upset and biting his hand to hold back the tears.”

They skip Keep Yourself Alive (marking the first time the band play no songs from their first couple albums), and Brian jumps straight into his guitar solo. This would be the last time the band would finish this section of the show off with the ending of ‘Brighton Rock.’ They probably dropped it because they felt it was too long between songs familiar to the majority of the audience. It would be resurrected for the ‘Works’ tour in 1984.

Freddie then grabs his 12-string acoustic guitar and says, “Okay, I’m gonna do a Jimi Hendrix impersonation in a song called ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love.’”

Pete Townshend and his wife Karen attended the show. Pete later remarked, “I thought they were the maddest band I’d ever seen.” He added that Queen were the only band in his eyes that took on the mantle of The Who by doing it their way with a brashness and Britishness that nobody else really had
